Zookeeper:
Summerfield Zoo is looking for a caring and hardworking professional to join our animal care team.
Basic Duties:
• Daily animal care - preparation of diets and feeding, cleaning of enclosures, providing enrichment activities
• Inspecting animals daily for health issues - fecal sample testing, assisting veterinarian with examinations and care, administering medications as directed
• Recording animal care information - animal observations, health concerns, treatments, etc.
• Performing routine repairs or maintenance for enclosures as needed - assisting with improvements or furnishings, controlling weeds or grass growth
• Assisting in and conducting educational programs and guest experiences
• Maintaining a positive work environment with fellow staff, volunteers and guests
Education and Requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent; college degree preferred
• Minimum of 1 year experience in animal care
• Adequate knowledge of exotic animal care
• Reliable transportation to work
• Must be capable of the physical requirements to work in a zoo setting (Ie - be able to lift 50 pounds)
• Must be able to work in all weather conditions year round
• Must be able to work weekends and holidays as assigned

Internships:
The 2024 season marks Summerfield Zoo's 17th year of offering internships. We offer internships for both current students and post-graduates that prepare you for careers in animal care.
Internships for Current College Students:
This internship runs four days per week for twelve weeks. Most colleges will offer course credits for the current student internship. We have internships available for biology, zoology, marketing, and business majors.
Internships for Post Graduate Students:
This internship runs five days per week for four months. It includes a stipend and housing if needed. This internship prepares post graduate students to work as zookeepers.

Volunteer Positions:

Groundskeeper:
Part time position or full time position.
This position includes mowing, weed-eating, general maintenance, etc.
Applicant must be willing to work out doors. Must be capable of the physical requirements of working in a groundskeeper position at a zoo (ie, lift 50 lbs, operate groundskeeping equipment, etc.) Must be able to follow directions. Experience preferred.
